In the section ›Weten we present to you information about the Low German language and associated culture.

Low German has been spoken in Colombia in South America since 2016. Or to be precise: Plautdietsch is spoken there.

In 2016, Mennonites from Chihuahua (Mexico) and from Canada came to Colombia, where they had acquired land. They founded the colonies of Liveney, Australia and La Florida. The colonies are located in the landscape called Llanos in Meta Department and on the river called Río Muco.

The exact number of inhabitants of these Colombian colonies is not yet known due to their young age. It should be in the three to four-digit range.

From the Plautdietsch perspective, Colombia is the country with the youngest and shortest history of Mennonite settlement.
