“De Goldene Schlut” is a collection of Low German rhymes that have been orally hand-ed down from generation to generation. It contains counting-off rhymes, fingerplays, action verses, songs, riddles, games and maxims, which were used to entertain and to teach. Children show a natural instinct for rhyme and readily memorize material that is simple and repetitious. Knowledge is easily retained when received in a congenial atmosphere. In every adult there is an indestructible child and they have assisted in passing child lore down through the ages.
Low German is the language developed from Old Saxon and the Middle Low German of the citizens of the Hanseatic League, known as “Plautdietsch”, a dialect closely related to Dutch, Flemish, Frisian, and English.
